Shaun of the dead (2004)

Scene 1
this first scene shows the first zombie that the two main characters come across which indicates this film will be a zombie film. you can tell the genre of the film when the woman fall onto a poll and the poll goes right through her. this allows the audience to know that the film is going to be a zombie film because the girl gets back up and tries to eat the two characters. the FX make up also allows the audience to understand what genre this film is going to be. the body language of the zombie character also allows the audience to know what genre the film is because the girl is slouched over and has no life to her body. this helps the audience understand that the girl is no longer human but is still living.

Scene 2
i think this scene shows that there has been a zombie apocalypse because every channel has news broadcasts warning people to stay in their homes. i think this conveys the genre by actually telling the audience that there is an infection spreading fast and warning everyone watching to either stay at home or get to a safe place as soon as possible.

unconventional scene
the last scene in the film is very unconventional because it shows that the world has adapted to the zombies and that they are being used within everyday life. it shows that shaun has kept  his best friend in the shed in the garden so he can still play games with him. this is unconventional because most people would want all the zombies dead but in this film they have kept them to do tasks.

Narrative
the characters in this film stick close and try to help each other out even if they dont like each other. the events throughout the film each have a good understanding to allow the audience know what is happening or what is about to happen. they are all acted out well and scripted well. the zombies are all different and all they want to do is feed on the alive characters. however, the zombies cant tell the difference between the humans and zombies when the humans act out being zombies to get into the pub.

technical elements
there is a wide range of camera angles such as long shot to show the zombies and how many of them are close. close up has also been used to show that the character is scared and then to show that they are dead in the eyes. the music plays a huge part in any film. it allows the audience to know that something scary, dramatic or sad is about to happen just by including some music in the background. in this film they used dramatic music when two characters were fighting in the pub then they used scary music when the zombies got closer. the editing was used effectively even right at the start when they had to edit a hole into the zombies back at the start when the poll went through her.

Dawn of the Dead Remake Analysis

In what way did Dawn of the Dead 2004 meet/not meet your expectations?
i expected there to be a lot of special effects make up in the film and there was. i also expected there to be a lot of special effects suck as things blowing up things or lots of action such as killing the zombies with guns or heavy objects. the film exceeded my expectations because i didn't expect a lot because of the first film but the remake was a lot better and it included a lot of make up and lots of special effects.

the reason for this is because i wasn't sure if the film would be good after watching the first one. however, the remake was a lot better, i think this was because they made it look really realistic as if the world had been taken over by zombies. they also had a good story line with good characters to show that even the ones you love are in danger and that you should stick close with the people who are still alive.

The scene that scared me the most was when Luda the pregnant one was slowly turning into a zombie and Andre the boyfriend was trying to deliver the baby. but then Luda died and he thought the baby would die too, then Luda came back as a zombie and gave birth to the baby, but the baby was a zombie and had to be killed.
i think this was achieved by the editor creating a fake baby for the film. they did a good job at making the baby look as if it was dead. they did this by having the babies eyes purple and evil looking eye balls. they also did this by having the baby try to attack hem while they are slowly looking at it. the scene was effective because it shows that if you are affected, so is your baby if you are pregnant. it is also effective because it shows that even the small people can get effective and try and kill you.

Narrative
there was a lot of zombies to show that the world has been taken over with this infection that turns the dead into the living dead. there was also characters that were still alive which shows that they haven't given up and that they will try to find a safe place. the action involved showed the audience what type of film this could be by having the alive characters kill the zombies with many different objects. i also think the action where they had to build the vans to escape was indicating that they were hoping to find a safe place.

Technical
there were a wide variety of camera angled. for example, they used long shot to show the surroundings and show how many zombies wanted to get into the building. they used close up shots to show the emotion of the characters faces. they used medium close up to show that the characters were covered in blood and that they have been fighting to live. the editing was good and they managed to edit many effects such as cars blowing up, heads being cut, fake baby and lots of fire. the music was really effective because it creates a scary tension by playing scary music in the background. you know if the music is scary something scary is about to happen. there was also a lot of gun shot and zombie groans as sound effects which was really effective.

mise-en-scene
the main location was a mall which enabled the characters to have a lot of secure places to hide while they escape the zombies. the costumes were effective because they were covered in fake blood and special effects make up to show that they are dead. they had many props such as guns, crowbars, cars and more. the lighting was dark because of the location that they were in.

What is a genre

A genre is a style or category of art, music, or literature. For example, a scary film is under the genre horror

The opening of a film is important because it allows the audience to understand what is going to happen in the film and it is to get the audience interested. It also sets the plot of the film

Film Genres

Horror
my expectation for a horror film is that the characters will either be scared of something haunting them, trying to defeat something that is haunting them or they will be the ones who are haunting someone. i also expect many personalities within the characters. for example, there is normally a dumb one who always acts stupid. There is normally a smart one who ends up dying first because they think nothing is happening. There is normally one who survives but ends up being scared for life.

I expect the location to be somewhere dark and abandoned, or anywhere dark. i also expect the location to include some history to why it is scary.

I expect the beginning of the film to be calm without anything scary happening because that will give everyone a clear idea of what the background is. The middle of the film normally consists of the haunting happening or when something scary happens. this could be anything from someone just following someone in the street to something paranormal happening in the house. I expect the end to show what happens once they manage to control whatever was haunting them or manage to get rid of anything/anyone that was scaring them. for example, The Woman In Black is a great example because the beginning of the film is calm and nothing scary happens. then in the middle the woman in black starts to scare the man who lives in the house. the end is the man dying with his son so he can be with his wife again which shows that the scary situation has finished.

Romance
i expect the character types to be either people who don't know each other at the start, or childhood friends who later on find out they love each other.
i expect the typical location to be romantic locations such as parks, restaurants, candle light dinners, cinemas, holidays abroad or across the country and romantic walks. i expect parks because normally in romantic films they go on a date and afterwords
for the story line, i expect the beginning to involve two people who meet randomly in a bar or at a different location, and for them to get to know each other. i expect the middle to be them falling in love and going out to many different locations to show their love. however, i also expect something dramatic to happen. i expect the end of the film to show the lovers getting back together and living happily together. for example, in the film Dear John, he finds this girls house because he found a picture of her when he was at war. he then tells her he knew her fiancee who was killed in the war. he then falls in love with her and she falls in love with him. later on, she finds out that he didn't actually know her fiancee and he just wanted to find the girl. she hates him, he tried his best to reconnect with her then they fall in love again after she forgives him.

Action
i expect the characters to be mainly male and for the males to be good looking. i also expect there to be a bag guy and someone who wants to solve a mission. i think they would mainly be male because action normally includes fighting, lots of fast action and maybe fast cars.
i expect the typical location to be somewhere where there is objects that people can hide behind or an area that has lots of space. i think these are typical locations because there is always action happening within the film. i think the spacious area would be ideal for the action genre because it allows them to be active within the film. having buildings as a location will allow the characters to run around and perform stunts within the building.
i expect the story line to be normal at the start, then during the middle i expect the characters to fight or have to solve a problem through lots of action, fast cars, or fighting. during the middle i expect the characters to figure out who is the bag guy is. in the end i expect the problem to be solved and i expect all the bad characters to be gone/dealt with.

Science-Fiction (sci-fi)
i expcet the characters to be smart and mainly men. this is because i expect sci-fi films to be scientific and most scientists are male.
i expect the typical location to be anywhere that is educational or animated/made up. i expect it to be somewhere educational because i expect them to be either learing something or teaching the audience without them knowing. i expect it to be animated or graphically designed because i expect them to make use the universe as their located to make them have unlimited location space. i also expect the location to be made up because they could be talking about something that isnt real so they would have a made up location to go with the story,
i dont expect the begining to be anything because each sci-fi film to be different. however, i expect each sci-fi film to be individual and different. this is because i expect them to be unique.
