Purpose of music video

This post is going to be about how artists promote their music in different ways. 

Promoting a particular song: 

When artists promote their songs they will use a music video such as Fall Out Boy's music video My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark. They use this video to promote the song and to make everyone want to buy the song. This works because the video will be shown on TV and the internet which will enable people to view the video without having to search for it. this also helps because the video may attract new listeners which will mean more people can download the song. This is also the primary purpose of most music videos. 

Promotion of the artists album:

The artist might create a music video to promote their latest album. For example, My Chemical Romance have a song called 'Welcome To The Black Parade' this video was used to promote the song and their latest album. They used this song to promote the album because it has the name of the album in the title. This is a secondary purpose of a music video because it promotes the album that the video is from. They can do this by putting a link to the full album in the description if it has been promoted on YouTube. 

Promotion of the artist themselves:

The artist will use a music video if they are new into the music business and want people to know who they are or if they have changed image/sound. This is one of the easiest ways to show that you have changed as an artist because they can visually see the difference. It is also a good way to see a new upcoming artist because you can put a face to the music. For example, Gerard Way used to be in My Chemical Romance and he is now a solo artist with his own album out. He made a music video for his song 'No Shows', this is to show the audience that his image has changed and that he is now doing new music. In the music video he is being introduced by a TV presenter and then he goes to perform his new song with his band. This is a great way to promote the artist because it enables them to understand the change and what has changed.

 

Promotion of and synergy with another media product:

The artist will make a music video that promotes another product such as a film or product. They can do this by including clips from the film or including the product that they are promoting. For example, Miley Cyrus promotes many products in her video 'We Can't Stop' such as Beats by dre and eos lip balm. This means that people watching the music video will see the products and want to know where they are from or even want them because she has them in her video. This is a great way to promote new products because big artists using them will get millions of video views and then the company will make a profit from it. 

Increasing the income for the record company:

The main purpose of all singles, albums and music videos are to increase the income of the record companies. It is rare for artists to not be a part of a record company and benefiting from the music videos themselves. 

Increasing the range of media artist is active in:

The purpose of a music video can be to extend the artists potential audience in different media forms such as TV, radio and YouTube. They can also be used to increase the influence the bond the audience has with an artist. this can be done by links between the video and social networking sites such as Facebook and twitter.
